Purging-it is not just for crawfish before you boil them

Over the holidays, my wife made me watch more fluff/reality shows than any man should have to endure. But one of them stood out as actually educational. Not sure what the name of it was but it consisted of frugal/cheapskates and how they live life by spending less money than most. A lot of the ideas were just ridicules, some were undo able due to living outside the city, but one idea in particular got me to thinking. So Cheryl and I talked and decided to give it try.

One fellow on the show talked about how his family does a "financial purge" from time to time. Basically, for one week the whole family does not spend any money. No going out to eat, no movies, no extras...no spending. So we did it. After this holiday's spending spree, it was the perfect time to stop spending; especially on the extras that we really didn't need. So, starting at noon last Friday, I quit spending money. We usually go shopping on Sunday after church for groceries but we passed on it last week. The point was to eat and use what we already had but usually passed on because we had other things we preferred. Cheryl cooked several nights and surprisingly we survived just fine without our weeks supply of groceries and other items.

There were several items I would have just picked up on the way home but didn't. I figured if I still needed it Friday, then I would go and get it. It was a good learning experience. I plan on doing this more often in the future. Maybe even a week every month. But even if you spend money on groceries, that is not the point. It is the extras that I wanted to cut back on and I did. Imagine, still having your paycheck in the account when you get the next paycheck. It was nice. I had a note due so I paid extra on it with the money I saved. It was a win-win for me.

So do yourself a favor and perform a financial purge yourself. You may just get something out of it that you can use all year long. Later.

Know your enemy

I have what some folks may consider a problem: I can't let things go. What I mean is if someone pisses me off, I can't just get mad/get over it and let it go. I never believed in "getting even" either. I always said "I'll get ahead".

Saturday we were headed to Sulphur to help a friend from work flip a trailer over with the tractor that he had been working on. I stopped by the local car wash to rinse off the tractor since the last time I used it was to bush hog and it was covered in dust. The owner of the car wash watched as I pulled into a bay and met me by the tractor. He proceeded to tell me I couldn't wash the mud off the tractor. The mud clogs the drain. We discussed/argued for a couple of minutes back and forth of rather or not I could wash the tractor there. I mentioned to him that this is a car wash; people don't bring clean cars to wash them. He told me that is was a car wash, not a tractor wash. I told him I was just going to rinse the tractor off and not clean out the bucket which had a couple of shovels worth of mud in it. He mumbled and grumbled as he walked off and I washed the tractor off. He was a real prick about the whole thing.

But it got to me. The more that I thought about it the more I just couldn't let it go. He could have handled it differently. He could have asked versus being a dick. Now, one good thing I can do is wait. I do not have to execute my attack immediately. I can take months to plan out just how I will get someone or a company back. So, today I went to the deer lease to sight in a rifle and do a little squirrel hunting. Normally, I get a little mud on the tires of the Tahoe running the logging roads at the lease. But today, I went mud ridding. There are plenty of mud holes to get the ole gal good and muddy and I didn't pass a mud hole without letting those Fierce Attitude mud tires eat away at some good ole gumbo mud and red clay. Of course, after a good day of mud ridding one must clean their vehicle off.

I pulled into the car wash with half of Beauregard parish stuck to my truck. $1 later, I left with a clean car from the car wash and a smile on my face. To make it even sweeter, someone left two dollars in quarters next to the controls. So not only did I get my satisfaction but I also made a profit. But I reckon the best of it all, was when I passed the security camera, I stopped, looked dead at it and said slowly "it ain't a tractor...it's a car". He underestimated his opponent. Never piss off a fool with more time and quarters than he has common sense. There is no telling what he will do to prove his point. Later.

Everyone asks me "how much weight are you gonna lose?" You know, I really didn't have a weight goal when I started. Since I started I wanted to get under an eighth-of-a-ton. (250 lbs) Now I am below that and wasn’t sure when to stop losing. I have lost between 80-90 lbs since I started losing earlier this year. One thing that still amazes me is my new pants size. I have never been able to shop in the “normal people” side of the store. Now I wear a 38” waist. A 38 INCH WAIST! Unbelievable. I could care less what the poundage is. I never thought I could get to this size waist. But I am at the point now that I am not trying to lose weight but trying to maintain where I am currently. I want to tone up and bulk up if I can; but most importantly not gain it back. I never want to go back to that old lifestyle. I was obese for the last 27 years out of my 36 years on this earth. That is a heck of a bad habit to break and I constantly worry about slipping back. I plan on continuing to log everything in myfitnesspal for as long as it takes; the rest of my life is fine with me. I find myself logging food down before I eat it or while it is being prepared or heated up. It is not an inconvenience that one might think it is once you get accustomed to it.

Three things helped me get where I am today. 1-God: I have prayed everyday for help and guidance and he has certainly blessed me with both. 2-The Diet Solution: Isabelle gave me the knowledge of how to eat including what size portions, how often, and what foods to eat together and which foods to stay away from. And last but not least 3-MyFitnessPal: I could have never done it without some way of logging everything down. I never realized what and how much I was eating until keeping track and seeing it every day on myfitnesspal. With the computer and iPhone, it is so easy to do. I would gladly pay good money to use this service that is free.

Anyway, little more than I planned on for an update, but you get the point. Whatever you do, don’t give up. It is worth it in the end. And if I, someone who has been overweight since elementary school, can do it…you can too. Any questions, just ask. I will gladly share my experiences with you of what worked and did not work for me. Just settled down to watch some SOA. This season started slow but is really getting good now. SOA and Secret Life are about the only TV shows I plan my evening around to watch. Been really busy lately-I put together a metal building kit I bought from Mueller Buildings in Orange. Chris helped me a few days and it went together really easy. I was surprised at how easy it was to put together as far as fitting was concerned. No field modifications were required. Their instructions are a little vague at best. One manual covers all buildings and it contradicts itself numerous times. But a couple of weekends and a tractor with a front end loader or a lifting device of some sort are all you need.

I've done pretty good on the weight loss goals. I never really had a specific weight goal in pounds-just to be healthy. I was at 300 when I started keeping track and was down to 224 a few weeks ago. I bounce around 225 and 226. Still watching everything I eat and continue to log down everyday, every meal. I am where I want to be for the most part. Need to get into better shape for the most part but size wise, I am happy where I am. Trim down the gut and tone up are my plans. 223 pounds of twisted steel and sex appeal works for me baby.

Still can't get motivated to exercise though. Planned on doing something all day when I got home but after a quick project outside before the dark and rain set in, I have not done much other than surf the web. I am still searching for that "fun" activity that could be considered exercise but have not found it yet. And with it getting dark so early in the afternoons, outdoor activities are ruled out. Been debating on joining a local gym...maybe that is the push I need to get moving. Later.

A potter is one whom works with pottery. The process of making pottery goes somewhat like this:

The potter takes a common piece of clay and molds the clay into a desired form; twisting, folding, wedging, and cutting along the way. After he has formed what he wants, then he puts the piece into a kiln and fires it up to over 2300 degrees. After it has been in the kiln for awhile, it comes out, cools off, and then goes back in for more heat for the final bake. But from that pressure of being molded and wedged and from the heat of the kiln, a beautiful piece of pottery is created that will last forever.

Imagine what it must be like to be a piece of clay. First someone comes along and digs you up out of your nice comfortable place in the earth. Next he molds and folds you in ways you have never experienced before. After all that is done and you think it’s over, he throws you into a kiln for hours on end. And just when you reach your breaking point and you think you can’t handle anymore, he takes you out and allows you to cool off. About the time everything cools off and your feeling good again, he throws you back into the kiln for another round of the most painful experience you have ever endured. But when it is all over, and you look at yourself shining and beautiful, you know it was all worth it. Anyone can be common old clay laying in the ground, but only the chosen that can handle the pressure and heat can become beautiful pottery.

And so it is with life. So many aspects of our lives can be put into perspective by this analogy; the trials and tribulations we are faced with every day. I heard a speaker on the radio recently talking about how you must experience pain to appreciate the good times. You know the old saying, “got to make it through the storm to get the rainbow.” All the same thing.

But some times the “trials and tribulations” are hard to under stand. “Why me lord? I am doing good; living right. Why did this have to happen to me?” It can truly shake a person to their core and test their faith more than some can handle. It is difficult at times to find the lemonade in the lemons. I have known this for quite some time. It is not a revelation, just common sense. Still doesn’t make it any easier though.

So, the next time you are struggling to understand and asking the question “why me Lord?”, just remember the beautiful pottery that you will become when it is all over. And whom best to be your potter than Jesus Christ? Later.

The Struggle Within

I have been struggling with obesity for a long time. A long time?...heck, most of my life. I have seen pictures of me as a child, kindergarten age, when I was skinny, fit, thin…normal. But I do not remember ever being normal.

There are a lot more photos of me obese. I remember very well in the sixth grade when everyone got in line to get weighed and measured. I tipped the scale at 206lbs. By the time I was in high school, I was wearing the size jeans I currently have hanging in my closet. I have never worn a t-shirt as an outer garment due to the unflattering curves of my body.

I am like most overweight folks I guess. Just about everybody that is overweight knows what needs to happen to lose it; they just don’t have enough desire to do what is needed. I have tried many, many diets. A couple of folks at work about ten years ago were on Weight Watchers and I followed along for a few months. I got down to my lowest weight of around 275 and was loving it. Slowly over time I started to introduce the old lifestyle back in and gained it all back and then some. You know, the old yo-yo effect. The heaviest I remember being was in the 330lb range. I could still tie my own shoe laces and wipe my ass but I felt bad; physically and emotionally.

When I came to the conclusion that I wanted to make a permanent change to my body, I started looking really hard on the internet. I feel that most of the programs out there will work. The question is, will they work for me? Everyone is different. Everyone’s body reacts differently to certain foods and exercise. Everyone’s priorities are different. You just have to find the program that will work for you. And you have to realize that a diet is not the solution. A diet is a quick fix that will not give you the results that you are looking for. You have to make a lifestyle change.

A lifestyle change. That is easier said than done. I had to come to the conclusion, I had to realize, that I had been eating wrong for thirty-six years. And that if I wanted to change me, I had to change my lifestyle. And to permanently change my body meant that I had to permanently change my lifestyle. I also realized that it would be a two step approach. The first stage was weight lose. I wanted to get down to my desired weight and then stage two was to maintain that weight. Again, easier said than down right?

There is no secret to weight lose. It is one of the most simplest things to understand. Calories in must be lower than calories out to lose weight. Calories in equaling calories out will maintain your current weight. And more calories coming in than your are burning will result in weight gain. No magic here. Again, like I said, everyone knows what they need to do; it’s the desire that holds them back. Do you want to eat what you want to or do you want to be healthy? It all boils down to what you want more. I finally decided which one I wanted. I started following a program and asked God's help along the way...and still do.

The particular program I am following is called the Diet Solution. You can find it on the internet and read all the reviews. Basically, it utilizes the glycemic index. This is the same type of program that a diabetic would use. Atkins banned all carbs which is not healthy and impossible to sustain for the rest of your life. That is the whole lifestyle change I was talking about. You must do something that you can use for the rest of your life or you will fall right back where you are currently.

This programs explains that not all carbs are created equal. You must have carbs daily to maintain balance. You just need to have the right ones and not to many of them. For example, I am losing weight eating McDonald’s every morning. I do not get hot cakes and sausage though. I eat one of two different meals. Either I get two orders of scrambled eggs and a hash brown or an egg, ham, cheese McMuffin. I do not put ketchup on the hash brown which is full of sugars and only get one McMuffin where as in the past a minimum of two was ordered.

There are a couple of things you can do to increase your success rate in weight lose. One-do it with a partner or group. It has been proven many, many times that those who have a friend or family member participate with them loose more. Two-accountability. Keep a daily log of what you eat. Log every single thing you eat and you will be surprised of what you put in your body. I keep track of my progress online with my fitness pal. It is great and it is free.

Luckily for me, my best friend (aka wife) is also eating healthier. She is the main reason I started eating this way. She started eating a low carb diet and I followed alongside her to make it easier on her. Another inspiration is my brother. He and I have had a couple of good talks about what is working for him and what is required to maintain the new me. Thanks Cheryl and Ray. I really appreciate the help.

I weighed this morning and I am down to 266.4lbs. Over 30lbs since I really started keeping track of it. My goal is to be down to 250 or less by the end of next month. An 1/8 of a ton. Funny isn’t it? Think about it. An eighth of a ton is an improvment! From there I don’t know yet. I’m thinking 220 would be an ideal weight. At that point I won’t be hung up on my actual weight as much as my appearance. What I mean is I also want to be physically in shape. Currently, I am doing more cardio than I am weight training to lose the fat. Later on, I plan on replacing some of that lost fat with muscle.

As bad as it sounds, another milestone I am shooting for is the ability to do a pull-up. That is something I have never done in my life. When I do, you can better believe you will hear about it. I’ll probably post pictures. LOL. I currently can do a mile on foot in 12:20. I would like to get that number down to single digits. Still a little heavy to be running/jogging to often. I do not want to do damage to myself.

And that’s about it. Find a program you can follow not only until you lose the weight but a program to follow for the rest of your life. A lifestyle change. Eating healthier and exercise works for me. And I promise it will work for you. Later.

Basically, the shorter the pointer finger (2ND) finger is in comparison to the ring finger (4TH), the larger the man's "lil buddy" will be. Yep. Today was final weigh in for our office's biggest loser challenge. I took first place with a total of 7.795% lost. Steve came in with a modest second. So I got a $100 bill and a new scale for the house. Going out to eat tonight to celebrate the success. Salad of course. Later.

Weigh in was this morning and I took the prize money with a grand total loss of 3 lbs. Actually, I was the only one that LOST weight out of the five of us total. One final weigh in four weeks from today for the grand prize. Remaining prize money (50% taken in minus cost of scale) and the scale. I am changing up my strategy starting today. As soon as I have a concrete plan I will definitely pass it on.

One thing for sure is this; I am not on a diet. Diets are temporary and fail over time. I am in the process of a lifestyle change. A lifestyle change tha will make my lifestyle more enjoyable. Later.

Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert after crossing into the United States , wandering aimlessly and starving. They are about to just lie down and wait for death, when all of a sudden Luis says.........

"Hey Pepe, do you smell what I smell. Ees bacon, I theenk."

"Si, Luis, eet sure smells like bacon. "

With renewed hope they struggle up the next sand dune, & there, in the distance, is a tree loaded with bacon.

There's raw bacon, there's fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon ... every imaginable kind of cured pork.

"Pepe, Pepe, we ees saved. Ees a bacon tree."

"Luis, maybe ees a meerage? We ees in the desert don't forget."

"Pepe, since when deed you ever hear of a meerage that smell like bacon...ees no meerage, ees a bacon tree."

And with that, Luis staggers towards the tree. He gets to within 5 metres, Pepe crawling close behind, when suddenly a machine gun opens up, and Luis drops like a wet sock. Mortally wounded, he warns Pepe with his dying breath,

45 lessons learned by a 90 year old

me. It is the most requested column I've ever written. My odometer
rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick.

Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

Here is a little back story, that particular clock was made by Kum and Felch co., a pair of Danish immigrants who came to the USA during the civil war era to continue their family legacy of intricate clock engineering. At the time, the only ‘immigrant’ clock making company was the highly touted Gizinmouth, the german socialite/clock savant who really gave the business it’s lucrative edge and ‘melting pot’ design.

To make this story short, Gizinmouth inc went out of business to give the torch to Kum and Felch who made a great success out of their family craft. What you have there is an 1861 Kum and Felch, “besondere” which means special to Germans. It is the first of their highly publicized releases.

A piece like that in the condition it is in is worth about 14,000-17,000 dollars by today’s markets!

Congratulations! You have a true american treasure!

Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, 'Nothing.' I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior I don't know why he didn't say, 'I love you, too.' When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. To my surprise, he responded to my caress, and we made love. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep - I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.

Hunting Trip

I got these two the first night a few seconds apart. A small herd of them were gathered around the deer feeder. The wind was blowing and I was in a box blind off the ground which was moving a lot. It was like shooting out of a boat. I had to "body shoot" these.

The next morning I was in a ground blind and was able to eye shoot this one. I used a call to get her to look at me and waited for her to blink...so she wouldn't see it coming. I shot this one at 68 yards.

This is the fireplace at the lodge. The whole set up was really nice.

This is one of two deer skinning stands which hold four deer each. There were at least ten or more harvested the first night. Overall had a great time. Later

Well, you are just on top of things aren’t you? It would appear you got me. According to your e-mail it would cost over $300 to hunt deer in Louisiana if I were a Texas resident that was native to Louisiana. But I think I see a problem.

The problem is you were in such a hurry to ATTEMPT to prove me wrong that you didn’t read any further down past the information you WANTED to find versus the truth. Let me inlighten you young grasshopper:

You see that line that says Deer (1 day)7 $36.00? Well, that 7 post script goes along with a list on the right side of the page. Let me share that information with you. It states “ New Licenses Effective June 1, 2009. These licenses are all inclusive. No other license is required.”

You see, Texas sells a non-resident hunting licesne for $315 for the entire season which is comparable to Louisiana. But Louisiana offers a 1 day deer license for only $36; 11.5% the fee charged that is required by Texas to hunt 1 day or every day. And, you can extend that 1 day license up to 5 days and it still costs a lot less than the $300 you have in your e-mail; which is correct by the way just not a complete listing of options my state, the great state of Louisiana, charges. Wishing you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas. We don’t have holiday seasons in Louisiana; we have holidays and they have names and we use them.

I planned a deer hunting trip for this year in Texas with some friends. I went hunting in Texas earlier this year for hogs and it only cost $48 for a non-resident license. I inquired about the cost for the deer hunt with the following e-mail. I also included the responses and other e-mails Texas and myself have sent back and forth to each other. I believe this is a first for me; arguing with a state.

$315 for three days of hunting one species? It only costs $29 for non-Louisiana residents to hunt for 5 days for everything from squirrel to deer. I just don't see how Texas can justify such a ludicrous amount. Here I am trying to bring money into the local economy and Texas punishes me? Thanks for the information. If we do go hunting in Texas this year it will be the last time. I WILL find a more friendly state to spend my money next time.

SECOND RESPONSE
The reason why the Non-Resident license is as such, is due to it having 5 white-tailed deer tags (3 buck or antlerless tags & 2 antlerless only tags), 2 Mule deer tags (1 buck & 1 antlerless) and 4 turkey tags as well as it is valid for all species in Texas to hunt, game animals, game birds, non-game, exotics and furbearers. With all the tags attached to the license, we are unable to void any for a short-period hunt (e.g. 3 or 5 days) since one can take up to 5 white-tailed deer in some counties and can also fulfill their bag limit by hunting in more than 1 county as well plus able to harvest their turkeys. Voiding tags would limit the legal amount of deer and turkey a non-resident hunter could harvest during their short hunt days. All states have different licenses fees, stamps and many have where you must purchase or draw for a license or tags, Texas does not. Comparing one state to another is neither fair nor justifiable.

Texas is not punishing anyone; it is the license requirement for anyone 17 years of age or over to hunt deer or turkey in the fall season in Texas for non-residents. It is your choice to come to Texas and hunt or not, we are not making you to do either, again, it is your choice. Texas is a very friendly state and welcomes all who wish to enter it for travel, camping, fishing, hiking, biking, boating and hunting, just because the license fees may be higher does not constitute we are not friendly. That is your opinion and you are welcome to it, but don’t judge us only on the account of a license fee.

Thank you for your lengthy and detailed response in defending Texas on their fleecing of non-resident hunters by charging them such contemptible fees. That is quite a list of animals covered by the one license. Problem is I am not hunting bucks, mule deer, turkeys, or any other game animals, game birds, non-game, exotics or furbearers. Just an inexpensive “meat hunt” for does and in the process helping to control the male/female ratio of white tail deer in Texas.

Comparing Texas to any other state is not only fair and justifiable but it is common sense. What else am I suppose to compare it to? Every state has a different program including bag limits, fees, etc. In comparing Texas to the great state of Louisiana, your non-resident fee for hunting white tail deer is despicable; just like their football team: the Dallas Cowboys.

Yes, Texas is punishing someone. In their attempt to punish non-resident hunters with outrageous fees they are actually punishing its own local businesses including hotels, restaurants and gas stations because now non-resident hunters will take their non-resident money and spend it some where non-Texas. My only dealing currently with Texas is the obscene hunting fees. So yes, Texas is an unfriendly state to non-residents. It may be only one account but it is the only account I am currently judging Texas on because it is the only one that effects me.

You are correct about one thing though; it is my choice to spend or not spend my money in Texas. And you have made that decision very easy for me. I don’t believe I will be paying $315 to hunt your precious deer this year or ever for that matter. Instead of making $50 or $100 off my hunting trip in Texas which would be a lot closer to fair, now you will be getting zero dollars from me.

So, being that Texas is greedy and overcharges non-resident hunters you are in fact screwing yourself because now you don’t have any of my money yet I will still have a freezer full of venison. Checkmate!

A week like no other

This has been one heck of a week. Some of you may know this already but some may not; my father passed away Monday morning.

Dad had a disease called HHT. He has suffered from nosebleeds for as long as I can remember; one of the side effects of HHT. Over the course of the last five or so years the disease has really taken its toll on him. Many years ago his body quit reproducing the blood he was losing and he started receiving blood transfusions. They started with a unit here and there but in the end he was going to the hospital three days a week receiving a minimum of two pints of blood each time. A couple of months ago he received his 1000th unit of blood. It was very taxing on him; physically and emotionally.

Last Wednesday he went for a doctor’s visit and ended up in ER where they checked him in the hospital for pneumonia. My wife and I would go and visit him after school each night. Saturday after church we stopped by to bring him some dinner he had requested on our way to Baton Rouge for the Angola State Prison Rodeo. We visited for 30 minutes or so then headed out for the long drive ahead of us. This was the last time we saw him. Just like every time I saw him or talked to him, we ended with “talk to you later, love you”. “Love you to. Thanks for coming by”.

I came to the realization years ago that with everyone, especially dad, when you talk with someone it could be your last conversation with that person so make sure you end it with no regrets. When I speak to my wife, son, father and mother, I always end with I love you. I never wanted to be one of those people that cry “I wish I could tell them how I feel. I wish I could tell them that I loved them” after their loved one has passed. No regrets.

I was driving into the plant Monday morning when my phone was ringing at 6:48; it was mom. I couldn’t answer the phone; not that I really wanted to anyway. For the last several years when my phone rang and it was mom or dads cell, my mind would think is this the time. Is this call the one telling me that dad has passed away? And until I heard their voice and knew everything was okay, I found myself not breathing for those few seconds. Well, mom called often but not at 6 in the morning. I got to the office and my phone rang…it was my brother. Yep, this was it. I knew that this was the call that would change my life forever. I was able to answer and Ray told me that dad had passed. We talked for 20 minutes or so trying to get a plan together then I called mom. She wanted to know if I wanted to see dad before the funeral home came and got him and I said no. She too knew that his time was coming to an end and had prepared herself for this day a long time ago as did I. She said that my uncle and aunt were on their way I didn’t need to go. All arrangements were made in advance for dad to have his body donated to science to help find a cure for the disease that he had struggled with for so many years. Nothing needed to be done so I stayed at work. I felt as long as my mind was right and I was not a threat to myself or my co-workers, I would stay. I didn’t tell anyone on the job other than my supervisor until Wednesday morning. I didn’t see the point in telling anyone because it wouldn’t do anything but bring people down. And it didn’t feel right to take advantage of the situation by taking off all week when I didn’t need to.

Thursday I took off from work and mom and I cleaned out all of dads personal stuff: clothes, shoes, etc… I hauled the items to be donated to Goodwill that afternoon and went to school. Friday my brother and I went through everything outside in dad’s shop and separated all the things we wanted to keep. Dad was a true craftsman; a very resourceful person that made all sorts of things himself when the common man would have to buy it. A carpenter by trade, he was also a welder/iron worker, mechanic, plumber, gunsmith, and the list goes on and on. One thing he was not was an electrician and some of the electrical work he did on his own was downright scary. It worked but damn; I was scared to touch it. He usually saved the electrical jobs for me. We were a great team. If either one of us needed to solve a problem or build something that had never been built before for a unique project we had, the ideas we would come up with together were brilliant.

Originally, we were under the impression that HHT would have the body for a couple of weeks. So it didn’t matter when we had the service, he was not going to be there. So mom scheduled it for Saturday so that those who work and those who live for away had time to make it. It was a really good idea. Well, things changed from the original plan. HHT was suppose to come to him and get what they needed within 24 hours and then release him. Turns out they couldn’t make it in time. They were not able to get anything for their study but doctors were able to donate his eyes and we were told that he helped several people with his gift. The plan was to have his body cremated being his body was donated to science; and that is what we did.

My brother and myself were told that we needed to dig a hole for the urn. I planned on doing this thirty minutes before everyone arrived at the cemetery the day of the service. My brother thought we should do it the night before…at night. I said “why not?”. So he got the post hole digger from dad’s house, loaded up in dad’s truck and picked me up on the way to the cemetery a little after 10pm. Until Friday night I had never dug a “humans” grave nor had I ever broken ground in a cemetery. But to do it at night, as my brother put it, “was so much like something dad would do”. So there we are, 10:30 at night digging a grave in a cemetery for our father; two brothers bonding, doing something that I am sure not many others have ever done before. (see picture below)

The service on Saturday couldn’t have been any better. The Ladies Auxiliary done an outstanding job setting up. There was standing room only at church. The Knights of Columbus had the color-guard and served as altar servers. The fire department had a short ceremony after mass which included “striking the fives” and an American flag presented to my mother. He also received an American flag for his service in the Naval Reserves. I came close to breaking when the fireman presented the flag on bended knee to mom; which she turned and handed to me to have. My wife was there and saw in my eyes what I was feeling and hugged me; placing my head on her shoulder hiding it so everyone couldn’t to see until it passed. Thank you Cheryl, I love you.

After the service, there was a social in the church hall right next to the church. That went on until about 2 pm. After that we left for home to change before heading to the cemetery. We all met there at 3pm with Monsignor for the final part of the service. My brother placed dad in his final resting place and I put the dirt on top of him; another first for both of us. After we left the cemetary, Cheryl and I rode around taking the long way home just talking and holding hands. I dropped her off at the house and I took a motorcycle ride for a few hours. I had been around way to many people all day and wanted to be alone. What better place than on two wheels cruising down the highway-no one else, no cell phone, just racing the wind and chasing the sun.

And that is it; my week in detail. Thanks to everyone that came to the service and helped the family through their time of loss. Thanks to everyone at church that put everything together so perfectly. And thank you lord for giving me 35 wonderful, joyful, unforgettable years with the greatest man that ever lived…Raymond Joseph LeBlanc-a man that I am proud to call my father. Later.

Angola State Prison Rodeo

We went to the Angola State Prison rodeo today. If you have never been you are really missing out on great time that is unique to Louisiana; it is the longest running prison rodeo in North America dating back to 1965.

We stayed Saturday night in Baton Rouge and drove home after the rodeo. The gates open at 9 am and the rodeo starts at 2pm and goes about 2 hours. We walked around shopping till 5pm and got home at 9:45pm; mind you it took 1 hour to drive from the arena to the prison gate and another hour from the prison gate to hwy 61-about 16 miles. I couldn’t believe how many cars were there parked in wave after wave in the fields. Some go just for the arts and crafts but we went for all day; start to finish and had a wonderful time.

Here is a picture of the convict poker game and a goat herding, dog riding monkey; there were three total. Funny stuff. Another one they had was called pinball. They took nine hula-hoops and placed them on the ground in the arena about ten feet apart in three rows. Then let one pissed off bull out. It is simple, last man standing in his hula-hoops wins. Not for the faint of heart. Had a great time with Cheryl and I highly recommend everyone go see this amazing show. It is every Sunday in October and one Sunday in April. Later.

Deer lease bunk house part 1

Every year when we go camping as a family, we sleep in an old camper that stays in the woods year round. Last year I decided was my last go around in the ole gal and decided to buy a camper. I looked for a camper that was deer lease worthy=cheap. I am not going to put a $15,000 camper in the woods with red clay and tree branches, pot holes, etc... So I decided to buy a used one.

You may recall the Avco RV I bought. Decided that was not the route I wanted to go. You can plan all week to go camping and you climb in it to crank it up and the starter is dead. No thanks. I would rather a trailer...a bumper pull single axle trailer to navigate through the woods easier because there can be some tight spots. After searching and not being able to convince myself to spend $2000 on a camper that was falling apart or needed extensive work, I decided to build one. I got the trailer from dad(which came from Uncle Bill), got the vinyl siding off of dad's house before it was torn down, and built the low-budget deer lease bunk house. A camper but I wouldn't want to call it a camper; it's more of a bunk house. It's sole purpose in life is to keep the rain and critters outside and the wonderful, freezing cold air inside. Nothing worse than sweating in your sleep. In the ole camper, you wake up at 6am and your drawers are clung to you ass from sweating all night. And you know damn good and well you weren't the only creature sleeping in that bunk last night. Spiders, bugs, all sorts of nasty mean little critters.

I got right at a $1,000 out of pocket so far and roughly 90 hours in it. I had to buy two wheels (tires and rims), lumber, jack, only $30 in vinyl-one corner post and some trim, a window, etc... I built the door from scratch and used an old door knob and dead bolt from the house; it came out pretty good. All I need to pick up to be complete is an a/c unit. I tried to buy one today but apparently they quit selling them already; the smaller, only a/c units anyway. I may have to order one if I can't find it local. Later.

Friday night out

One of the reasons I still have a blog is because Face book is too nice. Everyone is always so happy and joyful; I don't want to be the only one bitching and complaining.

Well, I just got back from Lowe's. I needed to pick up some material for tomorrow. I am trying to finish up the deer lease camper before hunting season starts. Anyway, I call Lowe's and the answering machine says they close at 10PM. When I get there at 8:50, I read the times posted on the door that say 9PM closing.

When I get to the checkout at 9:13, I was greeted by little miss thang with a familiar "find everything you needed" but in a slightly perturbed tone. As she was scanning my items, the following conversation took place:

"I called the store and the answering machine said ya'll close at 10PM"

"Yeah, they sed they corrected that already"

"Well, they have not corrected it yet because it still says ya'll close at 10PM"

"Well, the time is right there on the door"

"Yes, I see that but I didn't have the door in front of me when I decided to come here... that is why I called"

She was pretty quit after that. The idle chit-chat really slowed down after my statement. After I paid I was reading over the receipt on the way to the truck. She over charged me so I headed back to the door; which was closed and she had her back to me not wanting to acknowledge my presence. So I "gently" tapped on the door. After she read the receipt and realized she screwed up, she had to pay me with the money she already had sorted and counted.

Then, after that ordeal was over, I was trying to enter traffic on I-210 when a north Lake Charles version of Chrissy in her car would not move over into the empty lane and allow me to get over. I could have accelerated and got in front of her but I am trying to be a nicer person so I braked and let her get in front of me. I saw her smile while talking on her cell phone as she went by me with her gold teef glistening from her dash board lights and cell phone glow.

You see, I have a 3/4 ton 4X4 with over sized tires and 4" lift kit. My headlights sorta lit up the cab of her car in a extremely bright kind of way. When her pupils get back to normal size sometime tomorrow maybe she will re-think her position on driving courtesy. Rednecks 1, dipshit drivers 0. Later.

Confession

So, I am joining the Knights of Columbus at church and initiation is this week. I felt I needed to go to confession prior to this event. I get into the confessional and start to confess my sins. It has been about five years since the last time I went; and I only went then for my wedding in the church and to be Garret's sponsor for Conformation. I did not go willingly.

Anyway, while in confession, I had trouble finding something to confess. I started feeling good about myself that I live closely to how I am suppose to live then depression set in when I realized how boring my life is that I have NOTHING to confess! I only had a couple of items to talk about but most of them were sins that do not require going to confession because they are menial sins.

The wife said it was a good thing; I reckon it is. Later.

Here recently about the last six months I have not been posting as often as I once did. I found myself venting and bitching all the time. Although it is good to get it out I found myself carrying over the anger into everything else. Karma type stuff. Do good things and good things happen to you. Do negative things and negatives things happen to you.

I am trying to become a happier, more optimistic person here lately. I even said "good morning" to someone in the office Thursday before they said good morning to me. A first in about six or so years for me. I hope Steve appreciates the hurdle I jumped for him. Ha Ha. I use to take pride in my negativity and assholic ways. Just ask the Chrissy; she can vouch for me. I guess it was my defense mechanism I used. Nobody wants to associate with a negative person and that was just fine with me. I am not a very social person if you have not guessed that yet.

But, I have turned a new leaf. Oh I am sure I will slip from time to time but for the most part I will try to be happier and make those around me happier. Another reason I have not post much lately is I do most of my posting on Facebook now. It is more interactive than a blog and it is really nice to catch up with others that I have not heard from in years. Blogging is more of a one-way thing. Also, I can add to Facebook easily from my iPhone anywhere when I am bored. The blog is not as user friendly from a phone.

I did go and sign up for the 2010 Fall semester. After these two courses, I will be seven courses away from being complete. Still a couple of years out but I would like to finish. I am hoping to be done by the time I am forty.

I have also joined the Knights of Columbus at church. I wanted to learn more about my faith and give more back to the community. They do a lot with the youth in the area, fundraisers for those in need, etc... That Karma thing again you know.

Anyway, I will still continue to keep track of all you other fine folks that blog. I still have my daily reads. I will post funny pictures from time to time if I have nothing else. On the way home yesterday, I decided to swing by West Marine and look for some salt-water fishing supplies on my way to Academy. Well, coming from Sulphur, I-210 is the most logical route to take, but they are doing road construction. I decided to take a chance and go that way anyhow. Of course, like most road construction, there is a bottle neck where both lanes merge into one. Most folks don't like this; I do. I live for this situation. That and dirt roads anyway. But that is another post.

You see, I am what some might refer to as an asshole when it comes to road rage. I like teaching drivers how to drive the "John Way"; which is the only correct way I might add. I get over as soon as it is apparent that the lanes are merging and feel that everyone else should also. Now, if you decided to be "one of them" and try to pass everyone up and cut in line, then I will try to make you my bitch. Here is how I normally do it.

I call it "fishing". Scenario- single line of traffic, merging lane empty except for those wanting to screw everyone else; those are my fish. What I do, is open a gap between me and the car in front of me. That is casting out the bait. I merge over to the shoulder to show them the gap and say "hey big guy, look at this big juicy hole in traffic. Wouldn't you like to come on up here and get you this spot further up in line?" And then I wait. And wait. And sooner or later, I almost always get my catch. Some jerkoff comes hauling ass up the empty lane thinking "this nice fellow is going to let me in." WRONG! At the last possible moment, I close the gap just enough so he/she can't fit but not to close so he can't fit behind me either. Now the bastard is screwed. At this point is when the driver is squirming with his gums-a-flapping; just like when you pull that big bass out of the water. Hehe. It makes my day so much better knowing that I ruined that assholes day. Later.

Last week I tested for NETA IV and I am happy to say that I passed. NETA stands for (Inter)National Electrical Testing Association. There are four levels for technicians. In order for a company to be part of NETA, X amount of technicians must be level III or higher. I was already level III from the last company and thankfully it carried over. I did everything I could think of to pass this test. For the last couple of weeks after school I would go to the library till closing to study, took the day before the test off from work to study, and the morning of the test I recorded thirty minutes of me reading my notes on my iphone and played it back on the truck stereo twice on the way to Lafayette. I figured that was a wasted hour that I couldn't read then in hit me to record myself on the iphone. Worked great.

Last year around summer time, I entered a "free hog hunt" drawing and I won. At the end of last year, I scheduled the hunt for April 26, 2010. It just happened that I took the exam last week and then took vacation this week but it sure has worked out nice. Couldn't have planned it any better. So, here I am in Waelder, Texas just outside of Gonzales getting ready to eat some breakfast and go hunting again. I will be posting pictures later on of the "wild animals". Later.

What a beautiful day to be outside enjoying a motorcycle ride. I started out in Moss Bluff with the intention of eating at Hooters in Beaumont but when I got there decided to keep on riding and I stopped in Winnie. After a quick bite at Taco Bell, I headed to Port Aurthur, through Bridge City, and headed north in Sulphur to Leesville. After stopping at Walgreen's for some suntan lotion (which was a little to late) I headed to Ragley then to Kinder on to Iowa then back home. All said and done, 349 miles on the old motorcycle today. That is by far the furthest I have ever ridden in one day. I couldn't have done it without the Mustang Vintage Solo seat with backrest. I couldn't imagine riding a motorcycle any great distance without one.

Just got back from church where we had our Easter Vigil. I guess I have never been to one before because it was all new to me. I reckon I just always go on Easter Sunday. Wonderful service by Father Miller. Hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed Easter. Later.

Well, the majority of those who voted in America voted for change at the last presidential election. And today starts the downward spiral to socialism and the destruction of this once great country. Here is the problem I have. Yes, health care needs some work; but I was just fine with my health care the way it was. What program, even a church program, doesn't have room for improvement?

I am very blessed and very fortunate to have a great job. I made the right choices along the way to get it though. No one gave it to me. But, nonetheless, I feel I am blessed to have what I do have and I understand that there are those out there who are not as fortunate. Myself at one time was not so fortunate to have health care. So I worked and went to school to better myself to get the opportunity to have a job as good as mine that provides health care at a fraction of the actual cost. But no one has the right to take away from me to give to anyone else. That is my beef. Taking away from those who earn it to give to those who do not. All done by those who do not earn it nor applies to them.

Now, the folks that are going to benefit the most from FREE health care voted this piece of shit muslim into office and these piece of shit government officials. But not one of the cock smokers that elected that piece of shit, not the piece of shit, nor the useless government officials are the ones PAYING FOR THIS DAMN FREE HEALTH CARE! I AM! YOU ARE! WE ARE! And all I can do is sit back and watch the greatest country on earth fold up like a cheap suit.

I do not get it. Why is it the government/my responsibility to provide health care to every swinging dick here? If you want health care, then do like the rest of us who support your sorry ass and GET A FRICKING JOB! That is how I got my health care. I pay every month for it. I DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT EXPECT SOMEONE ELSE TO GIVE IT TO ME!

So, the other morning a few of us were discussing the days activities when I was labeled as "crazy".

Okay, here is the situation:

Guy A owed guy B a dollar.

Guy A tries to hand guy B a dollar and he says "nah, don't worry about."

When guy A put the dollar back in his wallet, he put it in upside down and with the edge folded.

So I make an innocent comment "you put your money in upside down?"

Of course then he wadded it up and shoved it in his wallet just to bug me.

That is when guy C pipes up about me being crazy. I am not sure exactly what all was said as there were several people talking at the same time but the gist of it was that I am not OCD because my desk is in such a disarray so I must just be bat-shit crazy.

Why the hell would someone put money in their wallet upside down? In amongst all of this I also made a comment about putting my money in numerical order. Guy A said he doesn't do that either.

Am I the only one out there that organizes their wallet by putting money all facing the same way in numerical order? Just wondering. Later.

I can not begin to tell you how much I like working 4/10s. Off on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is the only way to work. Yesterday I started off with a shopping trip for work gathering a truckload of supplies to use for the next couple of months. After lunch, I played 9 holes of golf.

I have improved my driving and fairway shots a great deal since I last played. I now need to concentrate on my putting. On two different par 4's, I was on the green in 2 strokes but got bogey on one and par on the other because of my putting inabilities. Should have been two birdies. I also believe I play better when I walk the course. That is the main reason I started playing golf. Something I could do alone and get some physical exercise out of. Although, the course was crowded in my opinion. There are a lot of people off on Fridays in Lake Charles that play golf.

After the golfing adventure, I took a 125 mile cruise on the Harley. Ended up in Texas on some back roads and took the interstate home. When I got into Louisiana on that new three lane stretch between Vinton and Sulphur, I opened her up. I got up to 102 and it was still climbing slowly but I was approaching traffic and had to slow it down. I could only get 97 out of my last bike. I am sure this one has a rev limiter and it is still all stock; pipes, computer, etc...

When I get 1000 miles on it I will get it checked out at the stealership including it's first oil change. After that, I will do all maintenance. That first inspection is important to let them check everything; belt, tightness of bolts, linkages, etc... Anyway, after that 1000 mile inspection, I will start modifying it. I already have the exhaust mod ready to go. If I do it now it will void the warranty because the stealership would know. The modifications I am planning on are reversible if something major was to happen and I needed to bring it in during the first two years; that is how long the warranty lasts.

Well, I will catch you later. I have to start getting ready I am attending a Spanish class today put on by a friend in Lake Charles. I took two years of Spanish in high school and didn't learn a thing. I have learned more working at the job site than I ever did in school. I hope to pick up some more knowledge today to understand what people are talking about when they stand in line behind me. Later.

Another beautiful weekend in southwest Louisiana! Started off Friday with a trip to the driving range and hit my first golf ball of the year. I actually did better than I thought I would. 80% or better of the balls I hit went where I intended for them to go. Followed that up by a cruise on the motorcycle.

Saturday a few friends and myself went four wheeler riding at Willow Eddy's ATV park. I was there from 10am till 4pm and had a great time. The water was high so some trails were not accessible but we found plenty of others to romp through. I was really surprised at how well my Foreman performed. While riding, a large limb sticking out of the water "removed" a section of my four wheeler plastic, hit my leg, and moved me off of my seat slightly before I could get stopped. No one got hurt and the four wheeler was easily repaired when I got home. Some may get mad when this happens to them but not me. Not the "trying to change and be better" me. I look at it as a blessing. I would rather the four wheeler take the damage than me. If the four wheeler is broke... I can still go to work. Instead of cussing I thanked God for not letting me or anyone else get hurt, picked up my quarter panel, and headed on down the trail.

Sunday started off with church and breakfast with my parents. After breakfast we did the weekly shopping and went home to bar-be-que. Cheryl's mom came by for a visit so I fired up the pit earlier than expected so she could eat an early dinner with us.

Not sure what the week has instore coming up. Thinking of a new tattoo and a couple hundred mile motorcycle trip. I may just have to combine the two.

Busy

I have been awful busy lately. To begin with, I started a new job three weeks ago. It is a big step for me to change jobs. I don't care to do it but some times it is required or at least it seems like it is. All the new job jitters were there but it is getting better. I am also taking two classes this semester. One is a walk in the park and the other is a challenge. Between the tough class and new job, and life's generic issues the ole nerves are getting a workout.

Well, last week I installed a new motorcycle seat with a backrest on the scooter. The wife got me a new helmet for Valentine's Day and last Sunday I used the new helmet with the new seat and rode about 160 miles. The first weekend I drove the motorcycle, after about 30 miles, my butt was numb and then started hurting. This new seat is awesome. It is a Mustang Solo Vintage with the backrest. Once you ride with a backrest, you may never ride without one again.

This weekend I started off with a trip to the Sunrise Catfish Farm and caught a couple of pretty catfish with a co-worker and his family before meeting up with another co-worker and his son for some four wheeler riding at the deer lease. I had a great time doing both. The weather was cool, sunny, and low humidity. It is not like that often around here and you have to take advantage of it when it's here.

One reason I do not post as often as I use to, other than the usual lack of time, is that I hardly get on the internet for pleasure anymore. With the iPhone, I check my e-mail, facebook, and other daily reads during my down time and while stuck in traffic. It is a very convenient device and I use it all the time. Hope all is well with everyone out there

$80 and a six pack

$80 and a six pack is what it took to install this slide out in the back of my work truck. The far left corner usually collects a lot of crap because it is the hardest to get to. After lots of figuring and sketching, this is what I came up with. It is hard to see, but there is a piece of angle iron mounted on a 2X4 on the left side and another piece of angle iron on the cart which overlap each other to keep it in line. I put a gate latch to keep it in place and a stopper on the end so it doesn't fall out. I left six inches up front for a table and chair. It may not seem like something to blog about, but for anyone who works out of a truck would appreciate the genius of it. Later.
